On December 11, 2025, the Permanent Missions of Tajikistan and Switzerland co-hosted the regular meeting of the Group of Friends of Water at the United Nations Headquarters. The event gathered Permanent Representatives and water experts to review key water-related developments in 2025 and align collective priorities for 2026.

In his statement, the Permanent Representative of Tajikistan Jonibek Hikmat reaffirmed the country’s strong commitment to collective action on water issues, highlighting the urgency posed by accelerating glacier melt, increasing water scarcity, and widening financing gaps.

The importance of key events in 2026 was also highlighted: the meeting in Dakar in January; the celebration of World Water Day in March in New York; and the 4th Dushanbe Water Conference in May, which will serve as a preparatory meeting for the 2026 UN Water Conference. In addition, the upcoming 2028 UN Water Conference in Tajikistan was noted, emphasizing that all these events collectively provide important opportunities to strengthen global cooperation on water.
